One of the fasting growing water sport in the world is sea kayaking and nowhere is it more popular than in Nova Scotia, especially on the South Shore. Many people travel with their own sea kayak but for those who are new to the sport there are outfitters who would be only to happy to accommodate your needs. There are five types of kayaks: whitewater, surf, touring, light touring and general recreation. Other sub-classifications have sprouted up as well. For example, a fishing kayak is simply a normal kayak outfitted with features and accessories that make it an easier platform for fishing.

There are two major configurations of kayaks – “sit on tops” which as the name suggests involves sitting on top of the kayak in an open area and “cockpit style” which involves sitting with the legs and hips inside the kayak hull and a “spray skirt” that creates a watertight barrier around your waist. Whether a kayak is a sit-on-top or a cockpit style has nothing to do with which classification it falls under. Both configurations are represented in each of the five primary classifications.

So, there you have it. And if you want to know more about Sea Kayaking in the South Shore asking Jeff at Rossignol Surf Shop is a good place to start.
