As long as there have been stories of pirates there has been the legend of Oak Island and the gold that supposedly buried there. Many attempts have been made to find the treasure which, if ther, has been cleverly buried in a labrynth of puzzling layers. In fact a few people have been killed attempting to collect it.

Oak Island Resort overlooks the old site with 107 oceanview rooms and 13 seaside chalets. Built as a place to enjoy the western shore of Nova Scotia it has blossomed into a fully-functioning resort with over 8,000 square feet of meeting space. For business purposes the facility offers full audio-visual services, wi-fi access and custom catering for up to 450 guests or intimate gatherings of just a few.

In addition, there are pre and post convention offerings like deep-sea fishing, island picnics, and live entertainment. As well custom charters can be organized from the private Marina. For weekend getaways there are theme weekends like their famous “Murder Mysteries,” where the patrons participate in a “who done it?”

One of the innovations of the resort has been the spa facilities. Complete with massage area, fitness center, swimming pool and hot tubs the place can be entertaining even when the weather outside if frightful. The full service spa allows you to choose from a wide variety of treatments such as a relaxing Ocean Stone Massage, an Age Defiance Facial or a Detoxifying Body Treatment.

The full-service spa is just the start of a healthy experience at Oak Island Resort. Enjoy the indoor or outdoor pool (seasonal) and hot tub, relax in the sauna, or workout in the fitness center. Experience nature with a hike through one of Oak Island Resorts’ beautiful seaside trials.

This fabulous place is juts 45 minutes from Halifax and an hour from the Halifax International Airport.  Sea kayak among Mahone Bay’s 365 islands or take a side trip to Kejimkujik National Park. Take a hike or a boat tour or go golfing. World-famous Peggy’s Cove and the historic town of Lunenburg, one of Nova Scotia’s most popular tourist destinations,  arejust around the corner.

In 1994 I went to Iceland to perform in a club. You see I was a piano player and was laid off my job so went there for two months. It was quite an experience. A few years later I represented Regal Tours at the IcelandAir’s Mid-Atlantic Conference in Reykjavik. Thirteen countries were represented we bold ones from Nova Scotia threw the best party, out at the Blue Lagoon featuring lobster rolls and Keith’s beer.

Iceland was a tourism power back then. Icelandair was ranked as one of the best airlines in the world, sending aircraft out to thirteen countries from a country of barely 300,000 people total. The BlueLagoon created tremendous geothermal-electric power and the city of Reykjavik was heated by geothermal springs.

Just a few months ago it was reported that Iceland was broke. Property values are falling and people are losing their homes and jobs. This is catastrophic because, for the first time since 1875 – which saw 1,200 people leave from Iceland to Gimli, Manitoba after volcanic eruptions of the Dyngja Mountains had ruined 6,474.5 square kilometres (2,500 square miles) of land – are such a large number Icelanders considering leaving for other countries.

How can we help? Well, you and can travel there and boost their tourism season. Travel groups are offering great sales to come to the beautiful little island. For more information go to Iceland Tourism.

The outdoors is amazing: glaciers, icecaps, hot springs everywhere, amazing wildlife, fishing, great night  life. etc.

white point beach, white point beach lodge

I was asked to mention the great festivities at White Point Beach resort over March break and since it’s one of my favourite places in the world, here goes:

They’ve got an action packed week planned for you! Every day you’ll be challenged to “Try Something New”! Give Skipping, Meditation, Hip Hop Dancing, Speed Stacking, Martial Arts and more a try. Of course we’ll have our daily crafts, face painting, bonfires and marshmallow roasts, story time and movies too. Don’t forget the indoor pool, games room and trails too! Come spend March Break at the Beach.

Okay, that’s the official line but it’s a good one. Let me relate a personal thought. It doesn’t matter what the weather brings White Point Beach Resort is always a great place. We’ve been there in a drifting snowstorm, ice rain and hurricane winds and each oddity in the weather brings out some different quality in the resort. This is because White Point Beach Resort, as much as it is a very clean and modern place, still maintains its rustic veneer and the ocean plays differently with each weather pattern.

So, try a weekend there and I’m sure the service, the people, the beach and the bunnies will bring you back. Click Here: White Point Beach Resort March Break Schedule

annapolis valley, annapolisOnce a training center that saw almost a half-million servicemen and women trained for World War II and the Cold War and beyond HMCS Cornwallis was shut down and lay dormant for almost a decade before re-emerging as the newest and most comprehensive conference retreat in Nova Scotia.

Named after Edward Cornwallis, the founder of Halifax and governor of Nova Scotia from 1749 to 1752, this state-of-the-art military base was put in place in the early 1940’s to address the need for training sailors to serve in WWII. During the war years, HMCS Cornwallis was the largest naval training base in the British Commonwealth with the wartime strength of the base exceeding 11,000 officers, men and women.

Due to military downsizing, HMCS Cornwallis closed its doors in 1994. The military base that served thousands of our proud troops sat quietly and awaited its next adventure. The groundwork for what would become the Annapolis Basin Conference Centre was laid in the fall of 1998 as part of a revitalization effort of HMCS/CFB Cornwallis. They originally started up under the banner of Kespuwick Training Centre which is a Mi’kmaq term that means “where the land and water meet.” They then changed the named to the Annapolis Basin Conference Center to better reflect the hospitality industry.

Here are the highlights:

  • Only two hours’ drive from the Halifax International Airport
  • Four major meeting facilities with more than 50 meeting spaces that can accommodate from 10 to 750 participants
  • Spacious dining facilities and food services that cater to a full range of tastes
  • 235 guest rooms with private or shared bath
  • Single, double and one-bedroom suite accommodation.
  • Access to an aquatic and wellness center featuring a four-lane, 25-metre indoor swimming pool, cardio and strength training center, therapeutic pool and indoor walking track
  • Nearby hiking trails, golf courses, whale-watching, amusement park, zoo, historic sites and villages, Acadian communities and culture, Mi’kmaq First Nations’ interpretive center—and the world’s highest tides.

Come see for yourself: Annapolis Basin Conference Center

liscombe lodge, nova scotia

Every now and then I like to give a salute to some of the great operators in the Nova Scotia tourism industry. Liscombe Lodge Resort and Conference Centre along Nova Scotia’s picturesque Marine Drive is one of these places and I think it is the best kept secrets in Atlantic Canada.

A Natural Setting

At Liscombe Lodge you’re right on the beautiful Liscombe River which offers not only a fabulous view but canoing and river rides. This natural setting makes it easy to get close and personal with wildlife in the area with the sound of the river as great background music. At certain times of the year you can watch eagles, osprey and kingfishers or see moose wade out into the waterway.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic retreat or a fun-filled family holiday, Liscombe Lodge has great accommodations offering 17 private chalets, each with a sitting area, fireplace and veranda. Five four- bedroom cottages each with private four- piece bath, common living room and stone fireplace, and 30 river-view lodge rooms with private balcony.

Nothing is more relaxing than a peaceful afternoon spent on the Liscomb River. It’s your choice how you enjoy the view: a harbour tour on their 12 passenger tour boat, a quiet canoe trip up river or paddle boating out to nearby Riley’s Island.

On shore you can enjoy a game of tennis or shuffleboard on the Lodge grounds. Bike along country roads or hike along our nature trails. Scenic spots like the waterfalls on the Liscomb River Trail are just perfect for a picnic which can be packed for you. Also, a visit to nearby Sherbrooke Village, a living museum of life in the 1800s, is a trip the whole family will enjoy.

The food is great too, with traditional planked salmon as the house specialty. It’s prepared in the traditional, native way, slowly cooked on a maple plank outdoors in full view of waiting diners.

How to get There

Proceed toward Halifax on Highway #102. Take the Halifax- Dartmouth “via the bridges” exit ( Highway #118 to Highway #107 ). Proceed to the first set of stop lights ( Tim Horton’s is on your right ). Turn left on Highway #107 and proceed to Musquodoboit Harbour on #107 (Highway #107 ends here). Turn right on Highway #7 and proceed along Highway #7 through Musquodoboit Harbour then Sheet Harbour and on to Liscomb Mills. The entrance is located on the right side of the road prior to the Liscomb River.
