fly fishing, nova scotia fishingBefore anyone gets excited about the fact that there may be horrendous clouds of annoying flies that settle and bit let me set you straight. They are called black flies and they are a spring and early summer pest. However, I’m talking about a fly-fishing fly, the kid that hooks unsuspecting fish.

Sport fishing in Nova Scotia is not only a pastime it’s big business. In fact last year it brought $83 million into the Nova Scotia economy. And in these times this is nothing to sneeze at. To help this industry along the Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers and Hunters supported a contest for Nova Scotia’s official fly.

Now, i have an old fly-tying vice. In fact I made it myself in metal shop in Grade 9. So fly fishing was part of my early days in British Columbia. It started with a non-barbed hook, some colored chenille, buck tail hair, pheasant feathers and other assorted materials that I would put together to come up with the best fly for a certain creek. This is what Bill Carpan of Stillwater must have been doing when he produced the winning fly for the promotion of sport fishing in Nova Scotia. The “Nova Scotia Classic is tied in a classic salmon pattern” with black, red, white, blue, gold and silver to represents different parts of the province. Better yet, it catches fish!

Now, here’s the catch: Because the fly is not a living thing it cannot be designated as “official.” This why it is classed as being “offically recognized in the legislature.” For more infomration contact: Nova Scotia Sport Fishing or Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers and Hunters.

Nova Scotia Whitefish, anglingThe Atlantic whitefish is a species endemic to Nova Scotia, meaning that it breeds nowhere else in the world. In Nova Scotia it is found only in the Tusket and Petite Riviere watersheds and may not exist in Tusket River system anymore. Predation by non-native fish species like chain pickerel and smallmouth bass plus acid rain are mostly responsible for the low numbers of whitefish. Overfishing never helped this issue, either.

However, there is a bright light on the horizon. Formed in 2000, the Atlantic Whitefish Conservation and Recovery Team is dedicated to helping the endangered Atlantic Whitefish species recover from the brink of extinction.

Working with aboriginal peoples from the Petite Rivière/Bridgewater area, government and other interested parties, scientists at Nova Scotia Power are studying the Whitefish to better understand why its numbers are falling and find ways to help ensure its survival. One of the spearheads for this project is South Shore resident and biologists, John Whitelaw and Bob Semple (he took the photo), who have done much to help the fish get a new start in the province.

Unfortunately, angling for Atlantic whitefish is strictly prohibited—so observe the closure times and areas for angling on Petite Riviere.

White Point Beach Resort, Nova ScotiaFish caught during the winter from frigid water has an entirely different taste and texture than fish caught during the summer months. For this reason, many anglers gear up and cut a hole in the ice of many rivers throughout Canada. In Nova Scotia, one of the greatest spots to set up a shack and dangle a line is the LaHave River in Lunenburg County.

The Nova Scotia Smelt Fishing Tournament is in its 23rd year. Martin Bell, ( icefish@tallships.ca ) Chairperson for the tournament, promises unparalleled fun. This annual event takes place in early February at Conquerall Bank, Lunenburg County.

Viewing the design and artistry of the shacks is an event unto itself, so grab your camera and capture a real taste of Nova Scotia . But if you’re seeking some real adventure, bring your own shack, drop a line, and test your prowess against some of the more seasoned veterans! The entry fee is only ten dollars per person with cash awards offered for things like best smelt shack, largest smelt caught. There are a host of other related activities which are just as much fun.

With concerts, contests, and activities for adults and children alike, it’s a great way to break up the winter. Martin will be happy to offer further information at his email address.

Where the Lighthouse Route leaves Yarmouth on Route 3, the waters off the coast here teem with schools of sleek, powerful tuna. The town of Wedgeport, population 1,698, 10.5 km (6.5 mi.) off Route 3 on Route 334, was once known as the Sport Tuna Fishing Capital of the World. It was the site of the World Tuna Cup Match from 1937 to 1976, and attracted such luminaries as President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Amelia Earhart and Ernest Hemingway.

Today, Wedgeport is home to the Sport Tuna Fishing Museum and Interpretive Centre. The museum is also the starting point for a 5.4 km (3.4 mi.) interpretive nature trail that leads through coastal woodlands and along the Tusket River Estuary, and for an eco-boat tour that takes visitors around some of the 365 Tusket Islands.

Many of the coastal areas in this region were settled by Acadians returning after the expulsion of 1755. In 1767 the first of these Acadians settled in Wedgeport, East and West Pubnico and other nearby areas. With most of the productive farmland already occupied, the returning Acadians turned to the sea for their livelihood.

Today you will often hear Acadian French spoken as you visit the area’s small coastal villages. Just outside Wedgeport, the Butte-de-la-Croix is an historic site commemorating the first mass held here in 1769 for the returning Acadians. Marked by a simple wooden cross, the site remains a symbol of Acadian courage and perseverance. The site also features a saltmarsh boardwalk and a magnificent view of the Tusket Islands. The Festival Acadien de Wedgeport is held at the end of June.

The Atlantic Mackerel is a fast swimming, schooling fish species that is caught between Labrador and North Carolina. There are two major spawning components of this population: a southern group that spawns primarily in the Mid-Atlantic during April and May, and a northern group that spawns in the Gulf of St. Lawrence in June and July.

mackerel, fishing

When the mackerel are running they weave in and out of the harbors gorging themselves with anything that swims. They travel in large schools and 2 or more mackerel can be taken from a single cast using Mackerel feathers or multiple hooks. This is where the fun is. Sometimes you see fishermen coming home with two or three pails of the fish. No license is needed to fish mackerel.

The flesh is similar to tuna except is has an oily composition. They taste great fried but many people around White Point Beach smoke them.
