liscombe lodge, nova scotia

Every now and then I like to give a salute to some of the great operators in the Nova Scotia tourism industry. Liscombe Lodge Resort and Conference Centre along Nova Scotia’s picturesque Marine Drive is one of these places and I think it is the best kept secrets in Atlantic Canada.

A Natural Setting

At Liscombe Lodge you’re right on the beautiful Liscombe River which offers not only a fabulous view but canoing and river rides. This natural setting makes it easy to get close and personal with wildlife in the area with the sound of the river as great background music. At certain times of the year you can watch eagles, osprey and kingfishers or see moose wade out into the waterway.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic retreat or a fun-filled family holiday, Liscombe Lodge has great accommodations offering 17 private chalets, each with a sitting area, fireplace and veranda. Five four- bedroom cottages each with private four- piece bath, common living room and stone fireplace, and 30 river-view lodge rooms with private balcony.

Nothing is more relaxing than a peaceful afternoon spent on the Liscomb River. It’s your choice how you enjoy the view: a harbour tour on their 12 passenger tour boat, a quiet canoe trip up river or paddle boating out to nearby Riley’s Island.

On shore you can enjoy a game of tennis or shuffleboard on the Lodge grounds. Bike along country roads or hike along our nature trails. Scenic spots like the waterfalls on the Liscomb River Trail are just perfect for a picnic which can be packed for you. Also, a visit to nearby Sherbrooke Village, a living museum of life in the 1800s, is a trip the whole family will enjoy.

The food is great too, with traditional planked salmon as the house specialty. It’s prepared in the traditional, native way, slowly cooked on a maple plank outdoors in full view of waiting diners.

How to get There

Proceed toward Halifax on Highway #102. Take the Halifax- Dartmouth “via the bridges” exit ( Highway #118 to Highway #107 ). Proceed to the first set of stop lights ( Tim Horton’s is on your right ). Turn left on Highway #107 and proceed to Musquodoboit Harbour on #107 (Highway #107 ends here). Turn right on Highway #7 and proceed along Highway #7 through Musquodoboit Harbour then Sheet Harbour and on to Liscomb Mills. The entrance is located on the right side of the road prior to the Liscomb River.

beatles, beatle event

Hal Bruce has just announced that the 3rd Annual Maritime Beatle Event will be held on Saturday June 7, 2008 at the Olympic Gardens in Halifax. This year the world’s favorite “Other Ringo,” Jay Goeppner will be back as is Ticket 2 Ride along with Hal’s great show.

The first two events were runaway successes including the wonderful talk that Julia Baird gave us. Julia is John Lennon’s half-sister and told us what it was like to be the sister of “a Beatle.” And, if the truth be known, she was a closet Rolling Stones fan and told even John that Mick and the boys were her preference.

The Repeatles from Sweden will not be back this year because the timing was not right. They build up a solid base of fans in Halifax and the people from all over who attended and will be sorely missed.

However, an exciting band from Hungary, The Blackbirds, will be on the main stage. If you can read Hungarian here’s their site: The Blackbirds

Joining Hal will be former Rankin Family-drummer, Scott Ferguson, who also co-produces Hal’s recordings and owns Ferguson Music Studios. Donna Scaglioni will again be co-hosting and singing along with local acts and Beatle surprises

For info and tickets call (902) 435-7410 or email halbruce@halbruce.com
Early Bird tickets on sale now.
$35.00 (HST included).
Under 19 years $20.00 (HST included)
(age restriction after 9pm…19 years and older)

Oak Island Nova Scotia is home to the longest running and most famous treasure hunt in the world. The treasure hunt began in 1795 with the accidental discovery of the “Money Pit”. No one knows what treasure is buried there and no one knows who buried it. Some theories suggest that it could be Pirate plunder, Spanish gold or the lost fortunes of the holy warriors, the Templar Knights. Oak Island waits for you to solve the mystery.

Kim’s Note: Michelle Sears is the facilitator for the mentoring system called d TourismTechnology.com, a mentorship program partnering with provincial and federal agencies to assist Nova Scotia tourism businesses gain technological skills to compete in the global market

TourismTechnology.com is a fantastic project and one that we have been
having a lot of fun with. I have met with many operators in Nova Scotia
- usually in their home or business – for 2-4 hour mentoring sessions.
By having one-on-one sessions we can focus on their tourism business and
work with them on their existing website or help create a plan for a
future one.

We have done research on web designers/developers in each
province so that we could have a list from what operators could have
options, as well as researching the various companies offering online
availability, booking and shopping cart capabilities. Operators are
busy running their businesses so this is something that will help them.
We are also a resource that they can talk to long after the mentoring
sessions if they require information and/or help.

Blogging is something we do talk about and it was one of my New Year’s
resolutions – to start a blog on TourismTechnology.com in Nova Scotia.
My blog can be found at www.tourismtechnologyns.blogspot.com.

Our main TourismTechnology.com website is currently down but should hopefully be
back up in the coming weeks and this along with lots of other
information will be available there.

Best regards,

Michelle

Cuba – What’s the Problem?

cuba, mapWe’ve all seen the movies and heard the stories about the corrupt regime in Cuba in the 1950′s laundering money for the big mob families. Then Fidel Castro, who had more education than Batista and almost all of his ministers, wins an un-winable civil war and drives the mafia and its cronies out of Cuba (In all fairness a lot of nice people got hurt too).

And instead of issuing orders for mass bloodshed against his former enemies he threw an olive branch to the U.S. to help rebuild his country. When that was rebuffed by the Eisenhower administration Castro followed in the footsteps of Egyptian president Abdul Nasser – the upstart leader who kicked out his colonial masters, France and England – who got funding for the Aswan dam from the U.S.S.R. Okay, this is kind of a long-winded social studies lesson but for 58 years Cuba has been off-limits to Americans.

Think of this logically. There used to be no worse country than “Red” China. And except for “ping-pong summits” travel to this huge country was as forbidden as the emperor’s city in Beijing. During the “Cultural Revolution” hundreds of thousands were murdered or imprisoned. Now, they’re our pals.

And for a really big leap, look at Vietnam. The Viet Cong made Castro’s bunch look like the cigar chomping guerrillas that they were . This was a country that broke the Paris Peace Accord and seized the whole country in 1975, driving thousands of people out and imprisoning and murdering thousands of others. Now, they are big-time pals. “We had a tiff, but no harm done!”

But tell me, except for the hundreds of thousands of Cuban exiles (I don’t disparage their claims) why does such a small piece of real estate 90 miles from Miami cause so much apprehension and suspicion. Especially since the fall of the U.S.S.R.? I mean their’s got be a statute of limitations on travel to Cuba.

I didn’t really care for Pierre Trudeau, a former Prime Minister of Canada, but he did get it right with Cuba. He normalized relations with them because he saw them as no threat to the peace and security of North America. In addition, as many political and social scientists have said for years, “If you want to cave in a regime be friends with them.” In other words if Nixon had gone to Cuba along with his trek to China Fidel would be in a rest home in Bolivia by now.

visit cuba, carribeanMy point is to my American friends: You are really missing the boat with Cuba (no pun intended). It’s a great holiday place and the people are really friendly. It’s time to put your candidates to the task and stop the stupid visitation ban.
