“Listen, do you want to know a secret? Hal Bruce is the best Beatles soloist in the world! He performs The Beatles like Olivier (Sir Lawrence Olivier) performed Hamlet!”
Gary Jacob (Abbey Road on the River Festival
- the largest Beatles event in the world)
Hal Bruce made one of the most amazing transitions in music since Kenny Rogers went from the First Edition to being a country star. As the leader of the highly successful Hired Hand Band he shut the band down after years of packed houses and became a solo entertainer. And he chose to play the music of The Beatles.
The size of this leap staggers the imagination. Imagine having been on the same stage as acts like The Beach Boys, The Judds, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ricky Scaggs, Charlie Pride, Steve Wariner and Patty Loveless and, as well, having an original song on a compilation disk featuring Dolly Parton, Reba McIntyre and George Straight. That would be the career pinnacle of many a performer. Now, imagine shutting down your successful band and starting all over again as a solo performer - but not in the medium that gave you your success.
Hal Bruce started at “square 2,” as he likes to say. In fact his old country contacts were almost useless in the beginnings of his new-found path. He had to build a new audience, one show at a time in entertainment venues that paled in comparison with the country showrooms of his past. But with the help of his wife, Shelley, he has now become one of the foremost performers of Beatle songs in the world.

[...] spin on this is that these Beatle events are not Star Trek conventions. Ringo and Paul are not like “Mr. Sulu” and “7 of [...]
I’ve never quite understood the Beatles/StarTrek comparison either.
