In 1981 I trade my Wurlitzer electronic piano for a Kustom 88, an 88-key analogue piano built by the Kustom amplifier and organ company out of Chanute, Kansas. It featured a Baldwin hammers with a control panel containing volume, bass and treble control as well as a vibrato with a speed and depth control.

So i just picked oe of these up.
And the sustain is stuck on, do you know where i would start to trouble shoot that?
Hi Chris,
If I remember correctly, mine did the same thing after a couple of years. There is a spring in the pedal that either broke or stretched. I can’t remember which. I opened the pedal and replaced the spring. Since there weren’t any aftermarket springs I had to experiment with ones I bought at a hardware store. Hope this helps!
Cheers,
Kim
Chris, did you ever find a solution to this? I also bought a kustom 88 without the sustain pedal, and it won’t stop holding the notes. Also I feel like the vibrato is also out. The slider isn’t doing anything. I’d appreciate any help.
Thanks
I bought one with no sustain pedal as well. So I tried the sustain pedal to my Roland synth (with a 1/4″ to RCA adaptor plugged into the end of it) and it works perfectly. You DON’T need to get it re-wired or find an original one. Just get a Roland-type sustain (the Yamahas have the polarity reverse, so they’ll work backwards) and you’ll be good to go.
I have a Kustom 88 stage piano that we used on road tours with our high school jazz group in the 1980′s. It is pretty fair condition, but it needs a good home. Anyone interested? Photos on request. All reasonable offers considered…we ar located in Upper Michigan. BTW, the pedal works!
Thanks Chris H! I didn’t know they made 1/4 inch to mono rca adapters but they had one at Radioshack for $3.19. I plugged it into my m audio pedal and it works a charm! Wish I’d known this sooner.
Bruce,
if you read this, are you still looking to move your Kustom 88? Are you in the UP, or northern Lower Peninsula? thanks.
